Something New

I do love that when our plans fall through, something new, and completely different can enter. There is space!

This week, no ski trip to Mt. Washington has already meant we have been recipients of a great dog-sitting adventure, a fabulous dinner at my folks’ (they’ve now been living here a year – wow!), a thought provoking sermon, and some wonderfully awesome sunshine (which we enjoyed at the Estuary).

I think I did need some “down time” in my week to drink in my three with fresh eyes.

Life is so full. And busy. And don’t our eyes habituate to what we see most often? These three are amazing.

I love watching little d grow and grow and grow and… when I asked her what she wanted to do on her “reading break” you’ll never guess her answer.

“I want to take my brother and sister to Grandma and Grandpa’s for the WHOLE day, so that you and Daddy can spend time together”.

This girl came to our life with boundless nurturing energy, a great deal of wisdom, and overflowing love.

Playful. Centered. Open. Care free.

My little d. I’ve spent most days of your almost 8 years with you, and I am still surprised by your depth of being.

And your hunger for life. Your ability to giggle to the moon and back!

Its a canine weekend!

I wanted to take a moment in our busy morning routine to introduce Maurice or “Mo Mo”!

Mo mo is ours for 4 days! The best part is he is Daria’s teacher’s pug. Oh to be entrusted with a treasured pet!!

Cheers to new adventures, like trying out the small dog world…

There are lots of smiles on our kids’ faces this morning!

Snow Seekers Stumble

IMG_4187

Yesterday we were happily trimming our trees… getting into the yard and garden early this year.

Today we are crying in our coffees as we learn Mt. Washington is closing. Warmer temperatures = no snow = no ski trip next week.

With only 4 days off we have no time to travel further afield to seek the fluffy stuff.

The kids take the news in stride… they are in the moment happily knitting away and going out to play in their new emerging playhouse.

Small shed roof leak = no longer suitable for storage = perfect playhouse!

Now what?

I got this comment on my FB page the other day: “no complaining about no snow… u have an amazing back yard now” (meaning the ocean!)

True. But snow is in our bones.

Skiing was our every weekend.

Fresh air all day. Gliding. Laughing. Tumbling. Playing.

As we strive to redefine family life on the Coast, finding another outdoor pursuit for our family has been our biggest challenge.

Sure there’s biking. There’s hiking. Unfortunately little d has a form of “asthma” and sucks wind in these pursuits. The cold seems to be key for this.

We had been told Mt Washington was “amazing” and had hoped for a trip up there last Christmas. This reading break. But alas, closed, closed, closed.

We see the pattern… and must move on.

Perhaps little d’s kayak birthday wish will come true after all. Hmmmmm.

Well, out to garden in the rain. What else? Time to turn these spindly branches into some garden fencing… weaving a new path. Twisting, turning. Weaving.

Pox Recovery!

IMG_4077 IMG_4093

After over a week of the itchies, and more baths (at all hours!) than I could imagine… the pox is gone! And there are sparkles back in the eyes!~

Wahoo! I have to say this was a less involved illness than many our family has battled. If I could eradicate illnesses with breathing side effects with a vaccine, I’d go for that over getting rid of the POXERS.

I truly believe there is something strengthening about this illness. It feels everyone has grown a few inches, at least in spirit. A feeling “I’ve survived it!”. Confidence. Courage. Grace.

And with that, we got to meet the newest member of our family today… Chu’spa!

IMG_4139 IMG_4154

She is a good family friends’ dog who we’ll be looking after for 6 months. A Malamute-German Shepherd cross… 9 years old… we look forward to getting to know life with a canine very intimately!

We felt even more blessed to get to hang out with Chu’spa’s forever owners… in a time of our life where we are transitioning through the early days of my return to a 30+ hour work week (often done in the hours of 8pm to midnight), it was a joy and treasure to meet up in the great outdoors with some wonderful friends.

These folks knew us before kids were on scene… actually us mommas met before my hubby was even on scene! Pretty awesome. They are creative, energetic, dynamic, and oh so loving.

What of food? Well, I am more of a honey-lemon-or-tea expert these days, than a cook! Not much appetites here the past week. Today’s picnic was a yogurt-granola and trail mix spread with a batch of these cookies.
